Matte, Gloss or Kraft Packaging? Choose by Handling, Not Moodboard
A finish can look premium in a mock-up and become disappointing after fifty customers handle it. Packaging finish should be chosen around fingerprints, scuffing, moisture, colour reproduction and real use.

Direct Answer
Choose finish by failure mode. Gloss often gives strong colour and wipeability; matte reduces glare but can show rubbing differently; kraft creates a natural look but changes how printed colours appear.

Start With the Handling Journey
Map who touches the pack: production staff, courier, retailer and customer. A presentation box opened once has a different wear profile from a takeaway sleeve or repeatedly handled retail carton.
Matte: Control Glare, Then Test Scuffing
Matte surfaces can feel calm under bright light. Dark matte areas can reveal rub marks or fingerprints depending on coating and material. Test the darkest planned area physically.
| Option / Input | Value | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Matte | Low glare | Rub marks / fingerprints |
| Gloss | Vivid colour | Reflections / glare |
| Kraft | Natural substrate | Colour shift |
| Uncoated | Tactile feel | Moisture / marking |
Gloss: Strong Colour With Reflection Trade-Offs
Gloss can increase apparent colour saturation and wipeability, but overhead lighting may create reflections. Check whether glare interferes with small information.

Kraft: The Substrate Becomes Part of the Colour
Brown kraft is not a neutral white canvas. Light colours and brand colours can shift because the board colour affects the print.
Use a Handling Test, Not a Desk Approval
Load the real product, close the pack, stack it, transport it, open it repeatedly and inspect corners and high-contact areas.
The Best Finish Ages Acceptably
Packaging is judged after handling, not when it leaves the press. Approve the finish based on how it looks when the customer receives it.
A packaging finish is a performance choice disguised as a design choice.
